modernism.jpg

Modernist graphic design

Modernism has always been an inspiration to me. Read about it in DN (in Norwegian). "In a visually chaotic world, modernism attempt to achieve clarity in everything that is being communicated. To weed out the decorations, to systematize the message to make it clearly and effectively. Modernism is an ideology, more than a style"

East Meets West

A trip to San Francisco reminds Jessica Helfand that design can mean something very different in technology companies than it did for “classically trained graphic designers of a certain generation,” i.e. her and Michael Bierut. “Culturally, what has shifted is that they work in teams and they don't have the same kind of understanding of one person making one thing at one time.” Listen!

Animals and empty boxes

This was developed for a pitch I took part in for a Norwegian sports clothing brand. The package attempts to encourage further play, which both the children and parents can appreciate. The idea is that children can color the animal face on the packaging and then detach it and use it as a mask. The holes for the eyes have a practical function, because they show the contents inside the box.

This Experiment lets anyone, from anywhere in the world, draw the letters of the alphabet and then submit them into a massive database. From each pool of letters, the software creates the mean letter shape—or, as BIC is calling it, the universal typeface.
